Monitoring of Overflows of Rivers and Impoundments for the Ministry of the Russian Federation for Civil Defence, Emergency Management and Natural Disasters Response
The Ministry of the Russian Federation for Civil Defence, Emergency Management and Natural Disasters Response and the Rosgidromet planned to monitor the overflow situation on rivers, lakes and impoundments with use of beacons measuring the water level. Since most of the monitoring locations are located in remote areas, satellite communication channels were chosen.
The Ministry of the Russian Federation for Civil Defence, Emergency Management and Natural Disasters Response and the Steccom tested several types of beacons and, basing on the tests results, they chose the Naviset beacons with Iridium 9602 modems transmitting data via SBD.
The Iridium-based beacons transmit information on measured level of rivers in any spot of the Earth, which allows to monitor the water level in rivers and impoundments. During spring floods and river overflowing, the on-line monitoring of water basins gives the possibility to prevent flooding of residential areas, minimize damage to infrastructure and avoid loss of life.
The Steccom Company installed several beacons in the Urals, in Siberia and in the Far East.Monitoring of Ice Situation and Oil Spillages
In connection with the development of the subsurface resources of the coastal shelf, there is a danger of oil spillages in the seas. Among the beacons by the Marlin-Yug Company, there is a model OilST/30P, which provides on-line monitoring of the surface contamination (oil slicks and POL spills) paths, as well as of the hydrometeorological situation with data transmission via the Iridium satellite communication channels.
Moreover, for offshore platforms within northern latitudes, monitoring of ice situation is vital, this will prevent the platform collapsing due to ice. Among the beacons by the Marlin-Yug Company, there are models of IceST series, which provide the on-line long-term monitoring of natural ice swarm motion, measurements of temperature and barometric pressure with data transmission via the Iridium satellite communication channels.
